The congregation of Grace Church was established in 1881 as a preaching point
of the Aaronsburg Charge. In 1884 they joined with three other German Reformed
congregations–Trinity, Centre Hall; Emmanuel, Tusseyville; St. John’s,
Farmers Mills – to form the Centre Hall Charge. The church building was
constructed in 1884
Through the years Grace Church has seen many changes. Denominational mergers
took place and the church became first Grace Evangelical and Reformed Church and
later Grace United Church of Christ. In 1968 the Centre Hall Charge was
disbanded and Grace joined with Emmanuel and St. John’s to form the Tri-Penn
Charge.
The church building, located on the bank of Penns Creek in Spring Mills, has
changed too. In 1979 a new educational wing with a Sunday School/social room, kitchen,
and restrooms was added. The front of the sanctuary was renovated and the
sanctuary carpeted in 1984. In 2004, Grace significantly expanded the Sunday
School/social room area. In addition, the congregation approved the replacement
of the existing electric heating system with the installation of heat pumps for
the sanctuary, and both the existing and the expanded Sunday School/social
room. The heat pump systems are capable of providing air conditioning in
the summer as well as handling the heating needs in the winter. Modifications to
the original Sunday School/social room included new carpeting, ceiling, and an
expansion of the kitchen. The congregation of Grace hopes and expects the new
addition will become a resource and outreach to Spring Mills and the Penns
Valley community.
Through its benevolence, the use of its buildings, and the outreach of its
members, Grace Church continues to witness to God’s love and serve Jesus
Christ.
