Emmanuel Union Church came into being with William Earley, Esq. and his
wife Barbara deeded a piece of land in 1797 in trust for the formation of
Lutheran and Reformed congregations. The Lutheran congregation was organized in
1810 and the Reformed congregation in 1823. The church was known throughout the
years by many different names: The Early or Loop Church, Churchville or the
Tusseyville Church.
In 1854 the Penns Valley Lutheran Parish was
formed, of which the Lutheran congregation was a part. This parish eventually
dissolved and since about 1955, the Lutheran congregation has been joined with
St. Luke’s in Centre Hall as the Centre Hall Lutheran parish. The Reformed
congregation was served by a "circuit-riding" pastor until 1836, when
it became part of the Boalsburg Charge. In 1877 the Emmanuel Reformed
congregation joined the Centre Hall Charge, consisting of Trinity (Centre Hall),
St. John’s (Farmers Mills) and Grace (Spring Mills). Through denominational
mergers it became Emmanuel Evangelical and Reformed congregation and then
Emmanuel United Church of Christ. In the Tri-Penn charge was formed by Emmanuel,
Grace and St. John’s.
The stately brick church building on a hilltop
overlooking Tusseyville was erected in 1837 as a two-story one-floor building.
In 1879 it was extensively remodeled to make two floors, and a spire and a bell
were added. Recent renovations include a handicap ramp to the Sunday School area
and a sound system. A lighted cross on the steeple, visible from Route 322,
proclaims the Good News.
Whether in Sunday worship and study, in the
activities of the youth group and the Sunshine Class, or in outreach to the
community, the life of these two congregations witnesses to oneness with Jesus
Christ and service in his name.
